The theme of the film is definitely focused around relationships and young love. However there are also elements of confusion and and isolation. The overall aim of the film I believe is to show the difficulties with relationships, especially in a younger generation, and to also show that these difficulties can be resolved through communication.
The film deals with these themes in a somewhat effective manner, however there is some margin of confusion understanding what the director was trying to do. For example the narrative, although very linear, isn't particularly clear on what incident has occurred between these two to cause the disruption in their relationship. This makes it harder for the audience to relate to the characters and makes the emotional themes a lot less prominent and effective. However it's not all bad as the director does effectively convey these themes in other areas using different techniques. One is that the whole of the film contains very little colour variation away from just white, grey and black and when there is it is normally very dull colour shades (dark green, brown etc). This highlights the depression and isolation felt by both individuals after they have gotten in a fight with one another. There is also a shot near then end of the film where the male is riding his bike in the dark and the whole shot is pitch black until a car comes along and lights up his face. This technique of specific lighting is used to reinforce the theme of isolation and loneliness.

There were many scenes which helped the films content seem better, for example one of the final scenes shows the boy riding his bike off in the dark which symbolises the relationship between the couple and highlights the depressive theme.
